New front cover development

Following the style of my chosen style model I added a coloured box in the background to make the image stand out more and become more eye catching. I used an extremely similar styled font to that on my style model but aimed for a thicker font to make it more appealing to my target audience.

InDesign

I have started to create my double page spread on Adobe InDesign, by using this I am able to make sure all of my text is in equally sized columns and the image is in the correct place.

New front cover

I decided to fully change the style of my magazine's front cover but still kept the same image as I preferred this one the most out of the numerous amounts of images I had taken.

Colour Scheme Problem

I am still trying to come up a solution to my problem. I have decided to ditch the colours and go for the simple black and white effect, but I cant make a final decision on how I want it to be. Do I have it black and white, all black or all white? I am going to again ask some people within the age range of my target audience and see what they think.

Front Cover Colours.

I thought that maybe adding a touch of colour would look nice, I used  the eyedropper tool to extract the colour from Aidan's top and played around with it a bit and made it have a hint of green.

Front Cover Colours.

Finally, I used the colours from both models tops. I used the colour from Aidan's top and put it over Harley's top, then I did it again but the other way round.

Front Cover Colours

I then decided to do the same, but this time I used Harley. I again used the Eyedropper tool and used the model's lips as a colour guide, I adapted the colour slightly by using the colour scale that pops up when changing colour of smoothing.

Front Cover Colours

I came up with idea of trying to extract colours from other places on my front cover so that I wasn't going out of my colour scheme.

To gain the first colour I used the Eyedropper tool and extracted the colour of Aidan's (the model on the right-hand side) lips, I did this because it created a nice subtle orange/brown colour.

Front Cover Dilemma

Although my front cover is no where near complete, I decided I wanted to put my main story line on to see how it would look against my chosen image.

I couldn't come up with a final decision so I asked 20 people what they thought. Two people answered that they preferred the middle more vibrant green one, and I was not keen on that option from the start so I didn't want to put that on my front cover. The top more glassy effect font got 7 votes in total, although it links more with the name in a sense it wasn't good enough to be the most popular. Rallying up a total of 11 votes the bottom font was the winner. Because I asked for advice from my target audience this will help my image of what they want become clearer.

Aidan and Harley

This is a snippet of my progress. So far I have took photos of my new models, chosen which one I liked the best and began to edit it. I have had to edit this photo quite a lot, the lighting on the model on the right was much darker than the model on the left. Because I used a green background it reflected onto the models faces, arms and clothes, this is because of the placing of the lights.

Front Cover Images 2

As I was taking the photographs for my front cover I had to keep adjusting the lighting and this kept on happening. By having the lights set in different angles shining in various directions caused numerous amounts of shadows to become casted over my models bodies and faces leaving the image unusable.

Front Cover Images

I decided to take the images from a different angle to see if I could capture a more natural effect, but this did not turn out as planned. I still wanted to post this to show that I was trying to adapt the angle of images I was taking.

Aidan and Harley Tools

To get rid of the greenness I used two tools in particular on Adobe Photoshop. I used the Eyedropper tool to pick up the colour extremely close to the area I wanted to be the same colour, and used this in order to transfer the colour elsewhere to take away all signs of green. I used the Colour Replacement tool in order to complete this too.

Changing Models for front cover.

I took a mass amount of photos of my new models, I made them wear different clothes to see what style I thought would best suit my magazine; in the end I went for the more casual approach. I made sure that the two boys coordinated with each other to keep it within my colour scheme.

Changing Models

I decided to change the original female model in exchange for two boys. I did this because I thought that I could create a magazine suited to two boys rather than a girl featuring in a pop magazine.

Flat Plan for Music Magazine

I decided to create a flat plan for my music magazine so I could get a brief idea of where I would like things to be placed. I am still debating whether this is the final plan.

Editing front cover photos.

I then tried to edit the image further by changing the brightness from -53 up to -29 and the contrast from 13down to -50. The image became darker which is what wanted but it also started to gain a yellow tint which meant I couldn't continue editing the image without this happening.

I then realised that I was not happy with the way this was turning out and decided that this was not going to be an image that I was going to use.

Editing photos for front cover.

This is how I got the image down to the size that it needed to be, by doing this I created an easier work space for myself where I could focus on the things I needed to rather than trying to edit the whole image unnecessarily.

Editing photo for front cover.

I began to edit the photos a little bit more, I wanted to make the image darker so my models top wasn't blending in with the background. I didn't choose a very good spot to take my photos in, the lighting was too bright and the models top blended in with the background.
I changed the brightness levels from 0 to -53 with enabled the image to become my clearer and darker, and the contrast didn't get changed as drastically as the other, it moved from 0 to 13.

Editing photos for my front cover.

I took some photos of my model which didn't turn out how I hoped. This is the original image that was captured but I thought that I would have a go at editing it to see if I could make the lighting on it better.

Magazine Style Models

These Billboard magazines are what I am going to basing my music magazine on, I will be using various features from each of these front covers and interpreting them on my own magazine.

This cover will be influencing the placement of the artist's who is featuring in my magazine. I will be placing the band name 'Glass Rituals' across the middle of the main image, this will help catch the target audience's eye by having this as the main focus.

Magazine Pitch

I asked 20 different people to fill in my questionnaire, the people in which i asked were of mixed gender although more women felt obliged to fill in it than men, meaning 13 of those were female and the remainder males. referring to the research which i composed i have maintained a brief understanding of how i would like my magazine to look  and which style models i am going to use. I am going to create a magazine which similar relations to Notion and CLASH, i am using these magazines because they both attract people who enjoy up to date music which both partially fall in the indie genre as well as other genres combined.  On my front cover artists who are well known in that line of genre by teenagers within the age range of 14 to 18 will be featured. Because there are very few magazine which appeal to both genders i will make my primary target audience mixed gender of the same age range and my secondary target audience is not going to be as precise as the other and will be more loosely defined containing those who fall into an older age range. I am also going to included features from my style models but with a personal twist on them.

Naomi Wolf - The Beauty Myth

I created this presentation on Bubbl.us, I used this website in particular because I thought it would be easy to locate certain points of the theory if people didn't want to read it all and were only looking for small bits.

Marjorie Ferguson - Invitational

This part of the theory shows emphasis on the mouth being shut completely or with a hint of a smile, the models headed being situated to one side or either looking back to the camera, and also there is emphasis on the eyes are where they are looking. The projected moods used here are the curiosity of mystery or mischief, the hint contact potential rather than sexual promise, the cover equivalent of advertising’s soft sell.

This is what is called the Invitational pose. The main feature on this front cover is the model's eyes. By using someone with inviting eyes it makes the reader feel more obliged to purchase the magazine. By having the mouth shut which a small hint of a smile it helps divert the focus  to the models eyes. Having the head either to one side or looking back over the shoulder facing the camera, which you can see in the image above. This pose is used to create an effect which gives off suggestions of mischief and rather than a sexual promise, it is more of a hint towards contact.

They stated that audiences may potentially chose to consume media texts, this was all based upon four reasons; personal relationships, personal identity, surveillance and diversion. Escape and Diversion from everyday life. Escape from routine and problems; an emotional release. The first theory is Diversion. Blumler and Katz believed that some members of the public may choose to consume media texts as a source of escapism. This would allow the consumer to divert from everyday life and routine to something different of their choice. This could be a many different number of styles of media texts depending on the audience and what is suited to them.

What is a reader profile?

A reader profile is often created to show what the readers of the specific magazine are interested in. This allows you to see images of products such as clothing, food, places, people and electronics to show that those are the things in which the audience of the genre of the magazine chosen are usually fond of.

Some reader profiles can often include statistics which allows people to view additional information about the magazine and gives others the opportunity to connect with other readers.

Example of a Reader Profile

Here is an example of what a reader profile usually looks like, they contain the favourite things those who will be reading your magazine are usually interested in.

Music Magazine Double Page Spread

This is my first attempt at creating a post on Animoto. It took me a while to get used to how it worked but in the end I am quite happy with the outcome.

Music Magazine Double Page Spread Analysis'

Powered by emaze
This is one of the two music magazine double page spread analysis' which I have created. I chose to post this one on Emaze first, by doing this I was allowed to choose what theme I wanted to use, there was a wide range of different kinds of layouts to use. I chose to create this one using the art gallery theme, this matched the whole colour scheme of the double page spread too making the whole thing look tidy and professional.

School Magazine

This is a school magazine which I have created for a media lesson, this will help me later on in the year when I have to create another magazine but with much more detail.

This is my front cover, I took the photo myself using a camera provided by the school. I took the school logo from the official Heworth Grange website to make the magazine seem more official, using the colour picker tool I took the colour from the H on the HG logo and lightened it up to use as my background colour. On the title of the magazine I used the Drop Shadow, Bevel and Emboss effects to make it stand out more.

This is the contents page for my school magazine, I also took the photos on this page. I made up some storylines so it would look like my magazine contained some exclusive content about how to achieve different things in school as well as some achievements pupils in the school have got. I used an image of Lewis Baldwin because I created a story about him, this gives the reader a view of what the person in the story looks like; this is also a sense of making his face known. I also used an image of the outside of the school to make it seem like a more official magazine.

I created and edited the magazine cover and contents page on Adobe Photoshop.
